The Fayette County Farmers Market returns Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the municipal parking lot at South Main and East East streets in Washington Court House, with vendors selling fall produce and prepared foods.

This week's market centers on pumpkins, squash and apples. Organizers say children in the Power of Produce kids club will take part in the Ohio Farm to School Apple Crunch and cast votes for their preferred apple, with Karnes Orchard sponsoring. The Fayette County Health Department and Early Learning Head Start are scheduled as community guests.

A market column notes that large carving pumpkins generally are not ideal for cooking because they have big hollows, little flesh and watery pulp. Pie pumpkins and other winter squash are described as better eating and nutritious. Halving, seeding and baking squash at about 300 degrees until tender, then pureeing, is suggested for desserts, and the pulp can be frozen in one-cup portions for winter baking. Shoppers are advised to ask squash vendors which varieties cook best.

Vendors expected Saturday include Engeti, Greens & Greenery, Jim's Premium Ground Beef, Julie G's Cookies, Luigi's Gourmet Chocolate, Pappy's Sorghum Patch, Pawsome Dog Delights, Red Maple Goats and Soaps, Reisinger Farms, Slate Hill Farm & Orchard, South Plymouth Home Baked Goods and Raw Honey, The Sugar Creek Trading Co., Sunburst Wormstead, The Welch Trio, Windy Hen Acres, Bridgeview Gardens, Compton Creek Farms and Cozy Baby Blessings. Cozy Baby Blessings said this is its last market of the season, and the source notes other vendors may also attend.

SNAP EBT cards, credit and debit cards are accepted. Shoppers using SNAP EBT for food can receive matching Produce Perks tokens worth $1 per $1 for fruits, vegetables and food-producing plants. Farm Bureau members can get $5 coupons at each Saturday market, usable Wednesday or Saturday.
