Ohio school districts may now seek temporary waivers from certain gifted education service requirements for the 2026–2027 school year, according to a bulletin from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

The submission period began Oct. 1, 2026, and the department says it runs through the remainder of the school year. The waivers are described as time-limited exemptions tied to specific gifted service obligations set out in Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15.

The department said the flexibility is meant to let districts handle unique circumstances while still ensuring gifted students receive suitable educational services and support.

Districts that want to file a request can find the form on the department's Waiver for Gifted Education Services webpage. Questions can be directed to Gifted@education.ohio.gov.

The bulletin does not list an application deadline apart from the end of the school year, and it does not specify how long an approved waiver lasts or what criteria the department applies when reviewing requests.
