A zoning meeting in Pierce Township drew more than 100 residents from the township and Clermont County on Tuesday night, with potential data centers as the focus, according to WXIX.

The zoning board reported no active talks with data center operators and no pending applications, describing the session as forward-looking planning.

Attendees voiced worries about environmental effects, electricity demand and how close a facility could sit to homes. Several brought up the former Beckjord Power Station, shut down in 2014, as an example of lasting environmental harm. One resident said some people see that site as a possible data center location.

A moratorium blocks data centers in the township through May 31, 2027, and the board said it may be extended. During that period, a zoning official said the commission is writing rules and restrictions for the code so they are ready if an application arrives.

Residents indicated they intend to keep showing up at meetings to oppose a project. A township trustee told the crowd officials will stay open and honest, that the township has drawn lessons from other communities on communication, and that no nondisclosure agreement with a data center company would be signed if discussions occur.
