Storms that moved across Clinton County from Sunday night into Monday morning produced 725 detected lightning strokes, the Clinton County Emergency Management Agency reported.

Agency data put 525 detections, more than 72 percent of the county total, between 8:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Sunday.

The system moved west to east. It started near Clarksville at about 8:23 p.m. and strengthened quickly over Wilson and Richland townships, according to the agency. Wilson Township had 190 strokes, Richland Township 187 and Chester Township 89.

A second wave Monday morning brought the three most powerful strokes: 112 kiloamperes in Wilson Township at 7:13 a.m., 106 kiloamperes in Wilmington near McDermott Village at 7:05 a.m. and 68 kiloamperes in Liberty Township at 6:50 a.m.

The agency said the numbers count individual strokes rather than flashes, since one flash can include multiple strokes. The data does not separate cloud-to-ground from cloud-to-cloud strikes.

Residents were reminded to go indoors when thunder is heard and to stay inside at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.
