WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Clinton County Health District has scheduled a free evening diabetes education and screening session for Nov. 4 at the Wilmington Public Library, marking National Diabetes Month.

According to the district, the program runs 6 to 7 p.m. and is open to anyone. Staff members intend to present information on preventing and managing diabetes, field questions from attendees and give free hemoglobin A1C blood tests.

An A1C test, the district explains, shows a person's average blood sugar across roughly two to three months. It can help identify prediabetes or diabetes in individuals who are not showing symptoms.

Diabetes is described as a chronic condition that alters how the body handles blood sugar. When levels stay high over time, the district says, serious complications can follow, among them heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage and vision loss.

District officials also note that Type 2 diabetes frequently can be prevented or delayed through regular physical activity, balanced nutrition and weight management.

The announcement did not specify whether appointments are required, how many tests will be available or who qualifies for screening.
