Clinton County's solid waste district plans an October push to encourage correct sorting at community drop-off sites, according to the Wilmington News Journal.
Under the annual "Get Caught Recycling" effort, district employees and a mascot named Buster the Mouse will make unannounced visits to drop-off locations during the month. Residents observed following the program's sorting rules will be eligible for prizes that include reusable car litter bags, umbrellas and goods manufactured from recycled materials, the district said.
One participant each week will be designated "Culprit of the Week" and highlighted in local media and on the district's Facebook page.
The district reported that close to 1,000 tons of material was kept out of landfills last year through county drop-off sites and Wilmington's curbside collection.
Officials urged residents to check which items are accepted and review sorting instructions before heading to a drop-off location. Program details, local guidelines and site information are posted at co.clinton.oh.us/Recycling.
