The Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities has scheduled an employer-focused informational session for 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at LiB’s Market – Coffee & Specialty Roastery in Salem.
According to WKBN, employers wanting to learn about the advantages of hiring workers with disabilities are invited to attend.
Shirley Bowald, the board’s community inclusion and employment manager, said misinformation surrounds disability hiring and that companies frequently ask about transportation and workplace accommodations. She encouraged employers seeking inclusive workplaces to contact the board, saying staff can supply facts and help begin a search for a strong employee.
Superintendent William Devon said the informational day is intended to explain what the board does. He noted that Robert Bycroft School is widely recognized, but that the agency also runs other programs supporting people across their lives. In his view, individuals with developmental disabilities strengthen both the community and the workplace, describing them as hardworking, proud of their work and often long-tenured in their jobs. He invited the public to the open house, which includes a complimentary cup of coffee.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The announcement also points to CCBDD’s Reach 4 More employment program.
