A City of Columbus bulletin dated Oct. 8 shared seasonal guidance and upcoming recreation and arts events.
The bulletin suggests residents consider leaving fallen leaves in place. It says leaf litter supports overwintering pollinators, insects and microorganisms and insulates soil. As leaves decompose, the bulletin says, they return nutrients and can reduce spring mulch and fertilizer needs.
Columbus Recreation and Parks Department's 50+ Basketball League is open to individuals and teams. Individual players may attend open gyms on Oct. 11, 18 and 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. to practice and meet potential teammates. The league is moving to Douglas Community Center this season because of storm damage at Barack Community Center.
The Priscilla R. Tyson Cultural Arts Center will mark two exhibition openings Friday, Oct. 16, 6-8 p.m. Fatima Taylor's Between One and Many is in the Main Gallery, and Alissa Ohashi's Communion with the Unconscious is in the Loft Gallery. The event is free and includes light refreshments.
Community centers are also planning fall harvest parties; activities and schedules vary by location, so residents should check with their local center.
Other listed dates include closures for Indigenous Peoples Day on Oct. 12; mobile produce markets Oct. 15 at Linden and Tuttle and Oct. 16 at Adams and Douglas, both at 2 p.m.; Urban Wildlife outdoor hours Oct. 15, 3:30-7:30 p.m., at McKnight Outdoor Education Center; and The Adventures of Robin Hood Oct. 16-18 at Columbus Performing Arts Center.
