Columbus residents can pick up free trees at three Green Columbus giveaway events this fall, according to a city bulletin dated Sept. 17. The bulletin states that people living in Columbus and Franklin County may register ahead of time to choose a tree for their own property.
The first giveaway is scheduled for Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nationwide Children's Hospital, 300 E. Livingston Ave. A second runs Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dodge Community Center, 667 Sullivant Ave. The third is Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Green Columbus' Linden Nursery, 1142 E. 17th Ave. The bulletin advises calling 811 at least 48 hours before digging so underground utilities can be marked, and notes that private-property planting supports the city's Urban Forestry Master Plan and a 40 percent tree canopy goal by 2050.
The bulletin also describes a Therapeutic Recreation program offering fall activities for people with disabilities, including the accessible Adaptive Fitness Center at the Espy Adaptive Sports Complex.
The bulletin listed two free Friday concerts on the Scioto Mile at Bicentennial Park, in the series: the Columbus Jazz Orchestra with Byron Stripling on Sept. 18, and the Dan Tyminski Band on Sept. 25. Both are listed as 7-9 p.m., with food and drinks for purchase.
Columbus Recreation and Parks and the Cleveland Browns will hold a free co-ed flag football clinic for grades 2-8 on Oct. 6, 6-8 p.m., at Kilbourne Run Sports Park. The bulletin says registration closes Oct. 2 and space is limited.
