Columbus Grove EMS has supplied four Ohio police dogs with first aid kits stocked for treating injuries in the field.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office dogs Falko, Mookie and Liza Jane received kits, along with Luna of the Ottawa Police Department, according to WLIO.

The agency's members decided in May to do something for the county's K-9 officers, then raised $600 by selling baked goods during the Columbus Grove June Jamboree, WLIO reported.

Grant Schroeder, chief of Columbus Grove EMS, said the goal is making sure handlers have what they need should a dog be hurt while working.

Putnam County Deputy Chris Verhoff said a kit allows treatment on scene when units may be far from other help, before EMS arrives or the animal reaches a care facility.

Dale Schulte, a K-9 search team volunteer with the sheriff's office, described tracking assignments that can cover water and wooded areas and carry a high chance of injury.

Columbus Grove EMS said it will assist with restocking the kits in the future.
