Fayette County has started work on a countywide land use plan meant to shape development, infrastructure and farmland protection across roughly the next two decades, officials announced.

The plan is expected to cover future development patterns, infrastructure needs, economic development opportunities, conservation of farmland and natural resources, and community character.

Residents, business owners, property owners, local officials and other stakeholders will help shape the process through workshops, meetings and surveys, according to officials.

It follows the Fayette County Strategic Plan, completed in November 2025 with public input, which set six goals and 13 priorities. Completing a countywide land use plan was among those priorities.

While the strategic plan centered on organizational and operational matters, the land use plan is to offer detailed direction on growth and development, officials said.

County Administrator Kate Wells described the new effort as the next step in carrying out the earlier vision, covering growth, development, infrastructure and conservation, and encouraged participation.

Officials said the project differs from earlier land use plans because it is a joint endeavor across local jurisdictions and is intended to reflect priorities all localities support.
