Mahoning County is set to receive a combined sum exceeding $100,000 for traffic safety efforts across the next year, per an announcement from Sheriff Jerry Greene.
Two awards from the Ohio Department of Public Safety make up the funding. According to Greene, a Safe Communities Grant provides more than $46,000, and a Federal Traffic Safety Grant provides more than $84,000.
The Safe Communities portion may be directed toward education, enforcement and engineering connected to traffic safety, the announcement stated.
Greene characterized the traffic safety money as essential, saying it supports the county's efforts to do everything possible to protect the community. WKBN reported the awards on Sept. 23, 2026.
The announcement did not identify specific projects, a spending schedule, or an end date for the grant period. The combined figures named in the announcement are consistent with its statement that the county is receiving more than $100,000.
