A southwest Ohio sheriff's office reported collecting 103 pounds of medication and transferring it to federal drug authorities for disposal, according to a post the agency published on social media.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office said its Drug Take Back Day event, held Saturday, Oct. 24, produced 16 pounds of drugs described as old, unused or expired. The agency also reported that its two drop boxes in the office lobby have accumulated 87 pounds of old medication across the prior six months.

The 103 pounds cited by the sheriff's office combines those two figures. The agency said the material went to the Drug Enforcement Administration and will be destroyed in a way intended to limit environmental harm.

The announcement did not specify which DEA office received the medication, how the weighing was conducted, or whether the disposal had already occurred at the time of the post. The sheriff's office presented the collection totals as its own accounting of the program.

Drug Take Back Day events are promoted as a way to keep unused prescriptions out of homes, where they can be diverted or improperly discarded. The report did not identify any of the drugs turned in or estimate their original value.
