Two gifts from Niles VFW Post 2074 will go to the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office, WKBN reported.

The first, totaling $10,000, is intended for the Kids and Cop Campout program, which brings children to camp. According to the station, 11 disadvantaged youth attended a weekend camp in August with public safety personnel.

Sheriff Mike Wilson told WKBN that participants left saying they now want to become police officers, and that the program drew favorable responses from youth leaders and pastors who assisted. Commander David Sheely of the post said its members served overseas to defend the country and see local law enforcement as the people protecting the community now, adding that the post makes a priority of giving to such efforts.

The remaining $5,000 is directed to the sheriff's office drone program, according to the report. The station said the money will allow the purchase of an additional drone and flight training for more deputies.

WKBN lists Nick Rich as a contributor to the story.

The donations described in the report add up to $15,000, the figure used in the outlet's headline; the lead paragraph refers to the $10,000 gift.
