State and local officials gathered just north of Wapakoneta to open a rebuilt rest area in Auglaize County, a facility meant to serve travelers and point them toward nearby destinations. According to WLIO, Gov. Mike DeWine took part in the opening.
The site highlights attractions including the Bicycle Museum, an Ada football factory and the Ohio Caverns, the station reported. Exhibits from the Armstrong Air & Space Museum also are part of the installation, along with a storybook trail. Logan Rex, curator and communications director at that museum, described the stop as small in scale but potentially large in its effect on how visitors see Ohio.
DeWine tied the project to an eight-year push aimed at traveler safety and accessibility. A plaque honoring Robert Wahrer, recognized for 33 years maintaining Ohio rest areas, was carried over from the former facility; the station said it was the only item to make that transition.
Chris Hughes, deputy director for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 1, said the state's rest areas serve as tourism promotion points where drivers can find family-friendly stops nearby. DeWine said he expects to dedicate six additional reconstructed rest areas this year, bringing the total to 36.
