Richland Academy of the Arts reported a jump in Ashland County students during the 2025-26 school year, with participation rising from 12 to 38. Those students were among nearly 1,900 enrolled in dance, music, theatre, visual arts and Kenpo martial arts at the Mansfield nonprofit.

The academy says its historic building at 75 North Walnut Street is at capacity, and that outdated electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems could constrain further growth. It has launched a $3.7 million capital campaign called Empower the Arts to renovate dance studios and upgrade spaces for music, theatre, visual arts and martial arts.

As of August 2026, the academy reported raising $2,375,284.29 toward that goal. It also said it provided $21,167 in tuition assistance last year, and that since 1991 more than 4,400 people have received scholarships totaling $806,992. The campaign covers nine counties, including Ashland.

Executive director Dr. Michael Benson said the renovations would create space for artists of all ages and cited collaborations with Kingwood Center Gardens, Mansfield Playhouse, Mansfield Art Center and the Renaissance Theatre.
