Scioto County, Ohio — According to an Oct. 8 WOWK report, the Scioto County Commission recently approved a $1 agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway Company to buy 24 miles of the P-Vine railroad. County officials said they intend to convert the former rail line into a recreational trail meant to encourage tourism.
The report said construction on the $2.4 million project could begin in less than six months after years of discussions with railroad officials. Commission President Scottie Powell described a phased effort and acknowledged that the county would inherit bridges and trestles. Powell also said he believed grant funding for transportation and alternative transportation could be obtained.
An exact project schedule was not available in the report. Powell said Norfolk Southern would have 180 days to remediate the rail and ties before paving could begin. The report did not include a start date or confirm that grant funding has been secured.
