A guide published Sept. 23, 2026 by Richland Source rounds up volunteer openings at organizations serving Richland, Ashland and Knox counties, saying commitments can range from a single afternoon to weekly hours or specialized skills.

The United Way of Richland County connects prospective volunteers with partner agencies through a program it calls Volunteer United, according to the guide. Richland Outreach Center, described as entirely volunteer-run, offers free community meals, a diaper pantry and event support, plus a project supplying holiday meals to military personnel.

Other listings include Friends of the Library and its Evergreen Bookshop; Kingwood, with gardening, visitor greeting and tour guide roles; and Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center, where volunteers may serve as sidewalkers or horse leaders subject to age and training rules. The North End Community Improvement Collaborative and Matthew 25 offer farm and food distribution work.

Mentoring is available to adults working with children ages 5 to 16, with community-based matches meeting as little as an hour weekly. The Humane Society of Richland County, The New Store, the Ashland County Dog Shelter and a cat sanctuary seek animal and retail help.

ACTS 4 Love recruits sewers for comfort items, some projects done from home. Park and trail maintenance, invasive species removal and bluebird box monitoring are listed for outdoor volunteers. Safe Haven and New Directions need hotline, advocacy and event support; Safe Haven roles require training and a background check. The Kroc Center requires volunteers be at least 16 and complete an application, background check, child safety training and orientation.

The guide also names Ashland Family YMCA, SPI, KiCKS Foundation, Community Roots, Interchurch Social Services, MVAC, the historical society, Food for the Hungry and Repair Café.
