Residents of Knox, Ashland and Richland counties looking for ways to contribute can choose from a broad list of organizations featured in a Knox Pages roundup published Sept. 14, 2026.

The guide frames volunteering as flexible, noting that groups welcome help from people with an afternoon to spare as well as those able to commit a few hours each week or offer a specific skill.

In Knox County, the opportunities include SPI's play-based learning programs in downtown Mount Vernon, the KiCKS Foundation, New Directions Domestic Abuse Shelter, Community Roots, Interchurch Social Services, MVAC, the historical society, Food for the Hungry and Repair Café.

Ashland County entries cover the county dog shelter, ACTS 4 Love, park and trail work, Dale-Roy Services, Safe Haven, the Kroc Center, the Ashland Family YMCA and a cat sanctuary.

Richland County options include United Way's Volunteer United program, Richland Outreach Center, Friends of the Library, Kingwood, Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center, the North End Community Improvement Collaborative, Matthew 25, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Humane Society and The New Store.

Requirements vary. Safe Haven lists training, a background check and other conditions. Kroc Center volunteers must be at least 16 and complete an application, background check, Child Safe training and orientation. Dog shelter volunteers must be 18 or supervised by an adult. Raemelton and New Directions note possible training or age rules.

According to the guide, the roundup was produced in partnership with the Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
