Mahoning County law enforcement has scheduled two impaired-driving checkpoints for Friday night in Youngstown, with a third planned in the county on Saturday, a news release states.

The first stop is set for the vicinity of 3600 Market Street, operating from 10 p.m. to midnight. A second runs from 12:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. near Glenwood Avenue at Playhouse Lane.

Along with the checkpoints, the Mahoning County OVI Task Force and the Ohio State Highway Patrol will carry out saturation patrols across the weekend, according to the release.

The release lists expected operational support from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency, in addition to the task force and OSHP.

The task force is urging people who plan to drink to arrange a safe ride home instead of driving.

A 1990 Supreme Court ruling held that agencies must notify the public before holding sobriety checkpoints, or the stops could run afoul of constitutional protections against unlawful search and seizure. That decision left the timeframe for such notification unresolved.
