How the Ohio General Assembly works

Ohio’s legislature has 99 representatives and 33 senators, every Senate district is built from three House districts, and service is capped by term limits.

Ohio’s legislature is called the General Assembly, and it has two chambers. The Ohio House of Representatives has 99 members. The Ohio Senate has 33.

The two maps are tied together rather than drawn independently. Each Senate district is made up of three adjacent House districts, so a senator represents exactly the ground covered by three representatives. On the population figures published by the Legislative Service Commission, a House district represents roughly 119,000 residents and a Senate district roughly 358,000.

Service is capped. Term limits prevent a person from holding office longer than eight years in the Ohio Senate and eight years in the Ohio House, and no more than sixteen years in the General Assembly in total.

Because every address in Ohio sits in exactly one House district and one Senate district, the practical question — who represents me — has a single answer, and the legislature publishes a lookup for it. The same site carries the House and Senate directories, committee membership and the text and status of bills.

If you are trying to follow a specific bill, the legislature’s site is the primary record. Local reporting and summaries can lag behind a vote, and a bill’s status can change between readings.
