WARREN — Trumbull County commissioners have responded after an Ohio audit concluded the county misreported its American Rescue Plan funds, according to WFMJ.
The audit found the county did not follow U.S. Department of the Treasury requirements and listed 101 contractors and beneficiaries as subrecipients of federal money during the second and third quarters of 2025.
In their statement, the commissioners called the situation a learning experience. They said the county will rework its reporting so those projects are categorized as vendors or contractors instead of subrecipients. The board also said a third party will be brought into audit-related correspondence going forward, and that it wants to restart pre- and post-audit meetings with the state auditor's office.
According to the board, auditor staff once visited in person, which made those meetings easier to arrange; communication now takes place electronically.
Commissioners described the finding as minor and fixable, saying it carries no financial loss and no repayment obligation to the federal government. The audit included no findings for recovery at the state level.
Because the money is federal, WFMJ reported it remains unclear whether federal officials could try to recover funds.
