Allen Wilson has stepped down as executive director of Downtown Marion, Inc., with his resignation taking effect immediately, according to a public statement he released to the community. Wilson said he reached the decision after weighing the matter at length.
In the statement, Wilson described his tenure as among the most rewarding and demanding periods of his working life, and he said he was grateful for the chance to take part in redevelopment work in Historic Downtown Marion. He credited joint efforts with local business and property owners, community partners, volunteers and residents for recent momentum in the district, listing community art projects, placemaking work, new events and the expansion of long-running local traditions among those shared accomplishments.
Wilson also said revitalization succeeds through wide community involvement rather than through any individual or single organization.
As for his reasons, Wilson said leaving the position will let him put family first, noting that the role had left limited time for his wife and two sons. He closed by thanking Marion residents for their support of him, of Downtown Marion, Inc., and of the wider vision for the city's historic downtown.
The statement did not identify an interim director or a successor, and it gave no timeline for filling the position.
