The Williams County Humane Society will handle public visits by appointment only for a six-month stretch that starts Oct. 28, 2026, according to a press release distributed by the organization.
During that window, the shelter plans to upgrade its kennels and carry out other facility improvements. It also intends to review its policies, safety practices and day-to-day operations, the release states.
The organization attributed the shift in public access to evolving animal welfare requirements, naming Ohio's Avery's Law, along with changes in insurance requirements.
Humane society officials acknowledged that community members who like to stop in and spend time with the animals may be unhappy about the change.
Adoptions and questions about animals will still be handled, but by appointment. The organization directed the public to its Facebook page and website for updates. Appointments and inquiries can be arranged by phone at 419-636-2200 or by email at wchs123@gmail.com.
The release also restated the organization's stated commitments: a healthy and caring environment, quality medical care, placing animals in permanent homes, enforcing animal protection laws and public education. Officials thanked the community for patience and support during the transition.
The announcement was dated Oct. 23, 2026, five days before the new arrangement takes effect.
